Played at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte on July 8, 2014, the clash was expected to be a tense battle between two football giants. Brazil, chasing a sixth World Cup title on home soil, entered the semifinal carrying the hopes of an entire nation despite missing captain Thiago Silva through suspension and star forward Neymar Jr. due to injury. Instead, fans witnessed an unprecedented collapse. Germany opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Thomas Muller before unleashing a devastating attacking spell. Between the 23rd and 29th minutes, Germany scored four more goals through Miroslav Klose, Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira, leaving Brazil trailing 5-0 before the half-hour mark.
Klose's goal was particularly historic, as it made him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals. The second half offered little relief for the hosts. Substitute André Schürrle added two more goals, including a spectacular strike off the crossbar. Brazil's only response came in the final minute when Oscar scored a consolation goal, making the final score 7-1. The defeat stunned football fans around the world and drew comparisons to the infamous Maracanazo, when Brazil lost the 1950 World Cup on home soil. Germany went on to win the tournament, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final thanks to a late goal from Mario Götze, securing the nation's fourth World Cup title. Even today, "7-1" remains synonymous with one of football's greatest upsets and a night that forever altered the legacy of Brazilian football.
