Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has confirmed that the post-mortem examination (autopsy) of singer Zubeen Garg has been completed in Singapore, and his mortal remains will soon be handed over to the Indian authorities. Garg, aged 52, passed away after experiencing breathing problems while swimming (without a life jacket) during a yacht trip in Singapore. He was given CPR, admitted to Singapore General Hospital, but doctors declared him dead around 2:30 p.m. IST. He was in Singapore to perform at the North East Festival.
CM Sharma shared that the body will be handed over to those who accompanied the singer there, specifically, Shekar Jothi Goswami, Sandeepan Garg, and Siddharth Sharma (his manager) , in presence of Indian embassy officials. After necessary formalities, the remains are expected to be flown to New Delhi, and then to Guwahati. In Guwahati, the body will be kept at Sarusajai Stadium for public condolences. Assam has declared a three-day state mourning from September 20 to 22, during which official entertainment and ceremonial programs will be suspended.
A CID (Criminal Investigation Department) probe has been ordered by the Assam government to investigate all First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against the festival organiser Shyam Kanu Mahanta and manager Siddharth Sharma, among others, in connection with Garg’s untimely demise. Fans and leaders throughout Assam and India are mourning the death of Zubeen Garg, who was considered a cultural icon and greatly admired for his contributions to music across multiple languages.
