Ananya Lohia , Delhi - A court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a 42 year old woman to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for carrying out a brutal acid attack on a man after he ended their alleged relationship, calling the crime an act driven by malice and jealousy.
According to the prosecution, the accused, Mahezbinbanu Chhuvara, attacked 51 year old AMTS conductor Rakesh Brahmbhatt near Kalupur Railway Station in January 2024. As per the victim's statement, the two had developed a relationship after meeting during his bus duty, but he ended all contact after his family came to know about the affair. Enraged by the breakup, the woman allegedly threw acid on him while demanding to know why he had ended the relationship.
The attack left the victim with severe injuries, including permanent damage to his right eye and injuries to other parts of his body. During the trial, the court held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the attack was a deliberate act of revenge.
Along with the 10 year jail sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh, directing that the entire amount be paid to the victim as compensation. The judgment sends a strong message against acid attacks and crimes driven by personal vengeance.
