Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks Gayle’s Record, Falls Short of Historic IPL Century

Ananya Lohia , Chandigarh - Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again stole the spotlight in IPL 2026 with a sensational innings for Rajasthan Royals during the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mullanpur. The teenage sensation smashed Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in a single IPL season and came agonisingly close to registering the fastest century in IPL history.

Sooryavanshi played one of the most explosive knocks of the season, hammering 97 runs off just 28 balls with fearless strokeplay and unbelievable power. During the innings, he overtook Chris Gayle’s long-standing record by finishing the season with 65 sixes. The young batter needed just three more runs for a historic hundred, but his innings ended in heartbreak when his upper cut was caught at third man. The crowd in Mullanpur was left stunned as fans and Rajasthan Royals players watched in disbelief after missing out on witnessing history. Despite the disappointment, Sooryavanshi remained focused on the team’s success rather than personal milestones. After winning the Player of the Match award, he said, “Mere 100s lagte rahenge,” adding that his only aim was helping Rajasthan Royals win the IPL trophy.

The youngster has already scored two centuries in his short IPL career, including a record-breaking hundred against Gujarat Titans last season that made him the youngest T20 centurion in history.

Although he narrowly missed a historic century, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again proved why he is known as the 'Wonder Boy', and why he is regarded as the future of Indian cricket. His breathtaking knock powered Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2, where they will now face Gujarat Titans with a place in the final at stake.
