Swapna Kumbar, Bengaluru - A major diplomatic breakthrough may be nearing in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, as US and Iranian negotiators have reportedly agreed on a memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the current ceasefire and launching formal talks over Iran’s nuclear programme. However, the proposed truce still requires approval from US President Donald Trump, while renewed military strikes and regional tensions continue to threaten the fragile ceasefire.
According to reports, the proposed agreement includes a 60-day extension of the ceasefire during which negotiations would focus on Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions relief, and unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The memorandum reportedly calls for Iran to remove naval mines and allow free maritime transit, while Washington would consider easing certain sanctions and reducing restrictions on Iranian oil exports. US Vice President JD Vance said both sides were very close to a deal, although disagreements remain over uranium enrichment and Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Despite diplomatic progress, violence has continued across the region. Reports indicate that Israeli strikes and military exchanges in parts of Lebanon and Gulf waters have increased pressure on negotiators trying to stabilize the ceasefire. Iran has publicly downplayed suggestions that a final agreement is imminent, while Trump himself has cautioned against assuming a breakthrough is guaranteed. Analysts say the current situation reflects a delicate balance between diplomacy and the risk of renewed escalation, with global oil markets closely watching developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional security.
The proposed US-Iran truce framework could become one of the most significant diplomatic developments in the Middle East conflict if approved. However, with strikes continuing and several core issues unresolved, the ceasefire remains highly fragile as the world waits for Trump’s final decision.
