Houthi blockade on Saudi Arabia threatens oil supplies and Red Sea shipping

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - A Houthi blockade on Saudi Arabia could badly disrupt global oil supplies and heighten tensions across the Red Sea. Reports say the move could choke the Bab el-Mandeb route, a crucial passage for Saudi exports and world trade.

The blockade is being framed as a response to Saudi pressure on Yemen, but its impact could extend far beyond the region. If Saudi oil shipments through the Red Sea are interrupted, analysts warn that global supply could drop sharply, pushing prices higher and forcing tankers to take longer routes around Africa.

Shipping through the Red Sea is already under strain, and a sustained Houthi threat would add another layer of risk for insurers, shipowners and energy markets. The situation is especially serious because it comes alongside broader conflict in the Gulf, which has already reduced available oil flows and raised fears of a wider energy crisis.

The Houthi blockade threat is not just a regional standoff; it could become a major global energy shock. If the Bab el-Mandeb route is disrupted for long, oil prices, shipping costs and supply chains could all face immediate pressure.
