Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Pakistan has reportedly asked the United States for a $10 billion exchange stabilisation facility to help steady its fragile economy and foreign exchange reserves. The request comes as Islamabad continues to face intense financial pressure despite an ongoing IMF programme and a difficult balance-of-payments situation.

According to the report, Pakistan has sought a Bilateral Exchange Stabilisation Support Facility from the US Treasury, with a proposed maturity of up to five years. The idea is to give the country a stronger reserve buffer, support the rupee and improve confidence among investors and credit markets. The move also comes amid Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen ties with Washington after playing a diplomatic role during the recent US-Iran conflict. Officials are said to believe that this standing could help Islamabad secure more direct financial backing, even as it continues to rely on multilateral lenders for support.

If approved, the package would give Pakistan a major short-term financial cushion at a time when its economy remains under strain. But the request also shows how dependent Islamabad still is on external support to stabilise reserves, currency pressure and investor confidence.
