In a striking example of the hardships faced by people in remote areas, a tribal woman in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district walked nearly three kilometres carrying her 90-year-old mother-in-law on her back to complete pending KYC formalities required for the release of the elderly woman’s pension.
According to local reports, the pension had been stopped for the last four months due to incomplete verification procedures. With no transportation facilities available and fearing further delays, the woman decided to carry her bedridden mother-in-law to the concerned centre to finish the documentation process.
The incident has drawn attention to the difficulties faced by elderly and tribal communities in accessing welfare schemes, especially in rural regions where banking and administrative services remain limited.
Residents and social activists have raised questions over the lack of doorstep services for senior citizens and differently-abled beneficiaries, saying vulnerable people should not be forced to travel long distances for basic government assistance.
The video and images from the incident have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many praising the woman’s dedication while also criticising the system that compelled her to take such extreme measures.
According to eyewitness, the speeding vehicle was playing loud music while its three occupants consumed alcohol before veering into the wrong side of the road
