Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Pretoria Capitals ahead of the 2025 edition of the SA20 league in South Africa. This marks Ganguly’s first stint as a head coach of a franchise side, adding a new chapter to his illustrious cricket journey.
The announcement comes after the franchise parted ways with Jonathan Trott, who had served as coach during the team’s previous campaign. Ganguly, who earlier worked as the director of cricket with Delhi Capitals in the IPL and later took up a similar role with Pretoria Capitals, will now lead the team from the dugout.
Ganguly’s appointment has generated interest as he is one of the most celebrated figures in Indian cricket. A former BCCI president, he represented India in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, scoring more than 18,000 international runs. His leadership as India captain between 2000 and 2005 is remembered for instilling aggression and confidence in the side.
The SA20 auction is scheduled for September 9, where Pretoria Capitals will look to strengthen their squad under Ganguly’s guidance. The tournament is set to run from December 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026, across multiple South African venues.
With Ganguly at the helm, Pretoria Capitals hope to improve their performances and challenge strongly in the upcoming season. His presence is expected to bring experience, tactical depth, and renewed motivation to the players.
