Record Voter Turnout Bengal Phase 1 Hits 92%, Tamil Nadu Clocks 85%

Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - In a powerful display of democratic spirit on April 23, 2026, Phase 1 of the Assembly elections in West Bengal and the single-phase polling in Tamil Nadu concluded with remarkably high voter turnout. With Bengal recording an impressive 92 percent and Tamil Nadu registering 85 percent, the elections witnessed one of the highest participation rates in recent years, signaling strong public engagement in the electoral process.

From the early hours of the morning, voters began lining up outside polling booths across urban and rural constituencies in West Bengal. Enthusiasm remained consistent throughout the day, with first-time voters, senior citizens, and women turning out in large numbers. Several polling stations reported long queues well into the evening, prompting election authorities to extend voting hours in select areas to ensure that every voter had the opportunity to cast their ballot. In Tamil Nadu, where all 234 seats went to the polls, a voting percentage of 85.11% was recorded at 11pm. With 57.3 million electors in the state according to an ECI press release on April 23, this translates to 48.8 million voters, also the highest turnout in the state’s history. Across cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, as well as in rural belts, voters stepped out in large numbers despite hot and humid weather conditions. Special arrangements, including shaded waiting areas, drinking water facilities, and priority access for elderly and differently-abled voters, helped maintain a steady flow at polling booths.

The 92 percent turnout in Bengal’s Phase 1 is being seen as a significant indicator of heightened political awareness and voter mobilization. Key constituencies witnessed intense political interest, and despite isolated logistical challenges, the voting process remained largely smooth and orderly. With 36 million electors in this phase, the 92.35% turnout translates to an absolute turnout of 33.2 million, also the highest since at least since the 2011 assembly elections. In both states, women voters outpaced their male counterparts. “Highest ever percentage of polling in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu since Independence - ECI salutes each voter of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,” said chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Some clashes, allegations of intimidation, and attacks on at least three candidates were reported, but the polls were largely violence-free. According to Election Commission officials, the polling was mostly peaceful, with sporadic incidents of violence reported from districts such as Murshidabad, Dakshin Dinajpur, Asansol and Cooch Behar in West Bengal. No major serious incidents was reported in Tamil Nadu.

Election officials in both states confirmed that polling was largely peaceful, with robust security arrangements deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. Central forces, along with state police, maintained strict vigilance, especially in sensitive constituencies.
Political observers suggest that such high turnout could significantly influence the electoral outcome, as it often reflects voter eagerness for change, stability, or continuity, depending on the local political landscape. In several regions, inspiring scenes emerged of elderly voters arriving at polling booths with assistance, and first-time voters proudly displaying their inked fingers.

With polling now concluded, the focus shifts to the remaining phases in West Bengal and the highly anticipated counting day in both states. As political parties gear up for the next stage, today’s record turnout stands as a testament to the strength of India’s democracy—where every vote carries the power to shape the future.
