Jammu and several parts of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed unprecedented rainfall on Tuesday, bringing life to a standstill and triggering flood-like conditions in low-lying areas. According to the Meteorological Department, Jammu recorded its heaviest downpour since 1973, while Udhampur set a new all-time record with 629 mm of rain.
Heavy showers inundated residential colonies, damaged roads and disrupted power supply in many areas. Several rivers and streams overflowed, raising fears of flash floods. Authorities issued advisories asking residents to stay indoors and avoid venturing near water bodies.
In Udhampur, continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours caused widespread damage, washing away portions of highways and affecting traffic movement. Local officials said emergency teams have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall in the coming days, cautioning that the situation may worsen if showers continue with the same intensity.
Meanwhile, political leaders and civil society members urged the administration to expedite relief measures and ensure adequate support for families affected by the extreme weather.
