Desk Correspondent , Kolkata - A major political confrontation has erupted in West Bengal as Mamata Banerjee refused to step down despite a decisive electoral defeat. The move has sparked a nationwide debate on democratic norms, with filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma calling it an “attack on democracy.”
The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, suffered a major setback in the 2026 Assembly elections, securing just 80 seats. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party registered a sweeping victory with 207 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark. Despite the clear mandate, Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down as Chief Minister. Addressing the media, she alleged that the elections were “looted” and accused the Election Commission and the BJP of undermining the democratic process. She maintained that her party remains the “moral victor” and asserted that she would not resign. Reacting to her stance, Ram Gopal Varma expressed shock in a post on social media, stating that ignoring institutional processes amounts to “attacking democracy.” His remarks have added fuel to an already intensifying political debate. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the BJP’s strong performance in the state, calling it a significant victory for the party.
With allegations of electoral irregularities on one side and questions over constitutional propriety on the other, the political situation in West Bengal remains tense. As the transition of power unfolds, the controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign is likely to keep the spotlight firmly on the state’s evolving political landscape.
