Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 September 2025, inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Indira Dock and launched several development projects worth Rs 34,200 crore during the “Samudra Se Samriddhi” event in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Of this total investment, approximately Rs 7,870 crore is earmarked for maritime sector initiatives, including the cruise terminal.
Mumbai Cruise Terminal Details
The new cruise terminal spans 415,000 square feet and is capable of handling around one million passengers annually. It has been built at Indira Dock with the goal of boosting cruise tourism in India. The terminal is designed to accommodate five ships simultaneously, has 72 immigration and check-in counters, and includes aesthetic features like wave-inspired ceilings, glass panels offering sea views, and benches with marine motifs.
Broader Projects in Gujarat & Maritime Sector
Besides the cruise terminal, PM Modi laid the foundation stones or inaugurated multiple infrastructure and maritime projects. These included new container terminals, cargo handling facilities at ports like Kolkata and Paradip, multimodal terminals in Kandla, upgrades in Chennai and Car Nicobar, and ship repair facilities in Patna and Varanasi. In Gujarat alone, projects worth around Rs 26,354 crore were launched in sectors such as renewable energy, coastal protection, healthcare, urban transport, and national highways. Notable among these are the HPLNG Regasification Terminal at Chhara Port, the IOCL Refinery’s Acrylics & Oxo Alcohol project, and solar feeder & PV plants.
PM Modi’s Remarks & Vision
During his speech, PM Modi emphasized India’s dependency on foreign countries as the "real enemy," urging for Atmanirbhar Bharat where India leverages its coastal and maritime potential. He asserted that enhancing port infrastructure and connectivity is crucial to self-reliance and economic growth.
