Tokyo, August 28 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with a Daruma Doll, a traditional Japanese symbol of perseverance and good fortune, during his visit to Japan. The gesture highlighted the deepening cultural ties between India and Japan alongside ongoing diplomatic discussions.
The Daruma Doll, also known as Dharma Doll, is modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. It is considered a talisman of luck and resilience in Japanese culture. Traditionally, the doll comes with blank eyes—the recipient colors one eye while setting a goal and fills the second eye upon its achievement.
Japanese officials said the gift was meant to symbolize shared aspirations for stronger India-Japan relations and a successful partnership in areas such as infrastructure, technology, defense cooperation, and cultural exchange.
Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting that cultural symbols like the Daruma Doll highlight the values of determination and progress, which both nations share. He emphasized that India and Japan are committed to working together on regional stability, economic growth, and global peace.
The visit also included talks on expanding cooperation under the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, covering sectors like clean energy, digital innovation, and connectivity projects across Asia.
The presentation of the Daruma Doll, officials said, reflects not just tradition but also a message of hope and resilience as both countries look to achieve their long-term goals.
