Advisers to Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, have reportedly approached U.S. officials with a proposal to develop and operate a port on the Arabian Sea. The plan suggests that American investors build and manage a terminal in Pasni, a port town in Balochistan's Gwadar district, to facilitate access to Pakistan's critical minerals. This initiative follows a recent meeting between Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and U.S. President Donald Trump, where Sharif sought American investment in sectors such as agriculture, technology, mining, and energy.
The proposal explicitly excludes the use of the port for U.S. military purposes. Instead, it aims to secure development financing for a rail corridor connecting the terminal to mineral-rich provinces in western Pakistan.
This move marks a shift in U.S.-Pakistan relations, with Trump expressing openness to cooperation following previous tensions under the Biden administration.
