Desk Correspondent , Odisha - Authorities in Odisha’s Sundargarh district have suspended internet services and imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (prohibitory orders) in Rajgangpur town following violent communal clashes on Thursday. The unrest reportedly erupted after members of a particular community alleged the illegal sale of beef in the local market, leading to a heated confrontation that quickly escalated into stone-pelting and arson. Several people, including at least two police personnel, sustained injuries during the skirmish, prompting the district administration to declare a virtual lockdown to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The situation turned critical when a mob gathered near a local police station, demanding immediate action against those allegedly involved in the slaughter and sale. As the crowd grew restive, shops were shuttered and public transport was halted, leaving the industrial town in a state of high tension. In response, the state government authorized a 48-hour internet ban to curb the circulation of provocative videos and messages on social media platforms. Over 10 platoons of police force have been deployed across sensitive pockets, and a flag march was conducted by senior officials to restore a sense of security among residents.

Sundargarh District Collector and the Superintendent of Police are currently camping in the area to monitor the peace-building efforts. While the administration has appealed for calm, several individuals have been detained for their involvement in the rioting and for violating the prohibitory orders. Peace committee meetings involving elders from both communities have been scheduled to de-escalate the situation. Officials stated that the curbs would remain in place until further notice, and strict action will be taken against anyone found attempting to disturb the communal harmony of the region.
