The National Testing Agency (NTA) has informed the Supreme Court that it is planning to conduct major entrance examinations in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from 2027. The move is aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and security in the examination process.
During the court proceedings, NTA stated that preparations are being made to gradually strengthen digital infrastructure across the country to support large-scale online examinations. The agency believes that conducting exams through computers can help reduce logistical challenges associated with traditional pen-and-paper tests.
The proposed shift would allow faster processing of results, better monitoring of examination centres, and improved measures against malpractice. However, the transition will depend on the availability of adequate facilities and technological resources in different regions.
The proposal has sparked discussions among students, educators, and experts. While some welcomed the move as a step toward modernization, others highlighted the need to ensure equal access to computers and internet-enabled infrastructure, especially in rural and remote areas.
Education specialists have stressed that a smooth transition will require extensive planning, mock tests, and awareness campaigns to help students become familiar with the online format. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness and accessibility for candidates from all backgrounds.
If implemented, the change could affect several national-level entrance examinations conducted by NTA, including tests for admissions to higher educational institutions. The agency is expected to continue consultations with stakeholders before finalizing the roadmap for the transition.
The proposed move marks a significant step in the modernization of India's examination system and could reshape the future of competitive testing in the country.
