NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for directly questioning Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking during a press briefing, Stoltenberg said Modi’s move reflects India’s growing global influence and its role as a key diplomatic player.
He highlighted Modi’s “frank conversation” with Putin, where the Indian leader sought clarity on Russia’s military strategy and objectives in Ukraine. This, Stoltenberg said, sends a strong message that the international community wants peace and stability.
The NATO chief also addressed India’s trade policies and tariffs, noting that while there are differences between NATO nations and India, constructive dialogue is essential to manage these issues. He added that cooperation between democratic nations is vital to counter geopolitical challenges.
Modi’s questioning of Putin comes amid India’s delicate balancing act — maintaining close ties with Russia for defense and energy while also engaging deeply with the US and Western allies. Analysts view this as a sign of India’s rise as a neutral yet influential mediator in global conflicts.
Stoltenberg reiterated NATO’s commitment to working with India on shared concerns like security, technology, and a stable international order.
