Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata – The police arrested Nabadwip Municipality Chairman and Trinamool Congress leader Biman Krishna Saha early Saturday morning following the recovery of a massive stash of government relief materials from a local clubhouse. Acting on tips from local residents and BJP leaders, police raided the Baral Ghat Sporting Club—located right next to Saha’s residence—around 10:00 PM on Friday. Officers uncovered relief supplies, including tarpaulins, blankets, and saris, stockpiled across approximately ten rooms of the club. Saha was taken into custody from his home at 3:30 AM on charges of hoarding, drawing furious protests from locals who threw shoes and water bottles at him while chanting "thief, thief."
According to police and local sources, the recovered items were funded by the government and allocated specifically for public distribution. Local residents alleged that these essential materials had been deliberately withheld and stored for a prolonged period under the direct orders of the municipality chairman. While the police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine why and on whose authority such a vast quantity of relief was stockpiled, Saha has vehemently maintained his innocence. Meanwhile, local Trinamool Congress leaders have remained completely silent, refusing to comment on the arrest or the allegations.
This incident follows a broader, highly controversial trend across the state. Since the recent change in government, massive quantities of relief materials have been repeatedly recovered from various Trinamool Congress party offices and leaders' residences. Recent seizures include recoveries from Trinamool councilor Mridula Dutta’s house in Ghatal, a panchayat member's residence in Sagar, and several political warehouses across East Midnapore, intensifying public scrutiny over the systemic diversion of public welfare resources.
