Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - More than 500 people are feared dead after two boats carrying refugees may have capsized off Myanmar’s coast in recent days. The vessels were reportedly carrying mostly Rohingya passengers fleeing violence and hardship.

The boats are believed to have left Myanmar’s Rakhine State in late June before disappearing in rough conditions at sea. UN agencies said the scale of the loss could be catastrophic, with the total number on board estimated at more than 500.

The incident highlights the extreme danger faced by people attempting maritime escape routes from Myanmar. Many of those aboard were likely seeking safety in neighboring countries, but overcrowded boats, severe weather and long sea crossings make the journey highly perilous.

If confirmed, this would be one of the deadliest boat tragedies involving Rohingya refugees in recent years. It also underscores the continuing humanitarian crisis driving people to risk their lives at sea.
