News Desk : Mumbai finally welcomed the southwest monsoon on Tuesday, 13 days later than its usual June 11 onset date. While the rains brought relief from sweltering heat and humidity, they also caused widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city.
Heavy overnight showers inundated several roads and subways, affecting commuters and prompting civic authorities to restrict access to flooded areas. A subway in Everard Nagar was shut, while severe waterlogging was reported at the Andheri underpass, where BMC officials prevented vehicles from entering after an autorickshaw got stranded. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Wednesday, forecasting more heavy rainfall. Yellow and orange alerts have also been issued for parts of Maharashtra as wet weather conditions persist across the state.
According to IMD data, Colaba received nearly 49 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, while several areas, including Byculla, Sion and Bandra, recorded significant rainfall during the day.
The June 24 onset makes this year's monsoon one of the most delayed in Mumbai's recorded history, tied as the third-latest arrival since 1951. With more rain expected over the coming days, authorities remain on alert as the city braces for an active monsoon spell.
