Desk Correspondent , Imphal - Fresh violence has erupted in Manipur's Bishnupur district after a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack killed two young children a five year old boy and a two month old infant in their sleep at Tronglaobi village near Moirang, along the sensitive hill-valley boundary. The early morning strike on April 7, 2026, also critically injured a BSF jawan's wife, prompting widespread outrage and protests that spiralled into chaos when a mob stormed a nearby CRPF camp, leading to two protester deaths and over 20 injuries from security forces' firing.
Suspected Kuki militants allegedly fired the RPG from nearby hills, hitting a civilian home and reigniting ethnic Meitei-Kuki tensions despite recent peace efforts. Enraged locals blocked roads, set vehicles ablaze, and marched on the CRPF camp in Yaongangpokpi, where paramilitary personnel opened fire, killing two and wounding 26 others, according to Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh. Internet services were suspended in Imphal and four other districts for three days to curb misinformation and further unrest.
The attacks mark a setback to fragile stability after President's Rule was lifted, with security forces launching a manhunt for the perpetrators and deploying additional troops. Manipur has seen over 230 deaths since ethnic clashes began in 2023, and this incident underscores ongoing hill-valley divides, with valley residents blaming Kuki groups and demanding stronger protection. Authorities urge calm amid fears of retaliatory violence spreading to Ukhrul and other areas.
