The Manipur High Court has instructed the state authorities to issue fresh educational certificates to transgender individuals, ensuring that their gender identity is accurately reflected in official records.
The order came after petitions were filed highlighting the difficulties faced by transgender candidates in using old certificates that did not align with their gender identity. The court emphasized that denying corrected documents was a violation of their fundamental rights and created unnecessary barriers in education and employment opportunities.
Authorities have been directed to make the necessary changes in a time-bound manner so that transgender persons can access higher studies, competitive exams, and jobs without discrimination.
The decision has been welcomed by activists, who see it as a step toward inclusivity and equal recognition of transgender rights in the education system.
