Lalit Modi Opens Up on Split With Sushmita Sen: “Distance Was Too Much for Us”

Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - Nearly four years after making headlines with their relationship announcement, businessman and IPL founder Lalit Modi has finally spoken about his breakup with actor Sushmita Sen. During a recent appearance on the Humans of Bombay podcast, Lalit reflected on their relationship and revealed that distance eventually became the biggest challenge between them.

Speaking candidly about Sushmita, Lalit described her as a “very special” part of his life and credited her for influencing him positively. He shared that while their bond was meaningful, their lives were based in different countries, which made sustaining the relationship difficult. According to Lalit, Sushmita’s career and responsibilities kept her rooted in India, while his life was centered in London. Despite the breakup, he said he continues to hold deep respect and admiration for the actor. Lalit also praised Sushmita for raising her two daughters as a single mother and called her parents “very special.” The relationship first grabbed attention in 2022 when Lalit announced on social media that he was dating the former Miss Universe. He shared vacation pictures from the Maldives and Sardinia and referred to Sushmita as his “better looking partner.” His posts quickly went viral, sparking widespread reactions online.

At the time, Lalit had clarified that the two were dating and not married, even though he hinted that marriage could happen in the future. However, breakup rumours surfaced months later after social media users noticed that references to Sushmita had quietly disappeared from Lalit’s accounts. In 2025, Lalit confirmed that he had moved on and introduced his new partner, Rima Bouri, through a Valentine’s Day Instagram post. Sharing a video montage, he revealed that their 25-year friendship had evolved into love.

While their romance may have been short-lived, Lalit Modi’s latest comments suggest that his relationship with Sushmita Sen ended on respectful terms. Calling her an “amazing lady,” he said he still cherishes the memories they shared and wishes her nothing but the best for the future.
