Ananya Lohia , Chennai - Torrential rain continued to batter Kerala, claiming eight lives and leaving eight people missing as floods and landslides caused widespread destruction across the state. Thousands of residents have been shifted to relief camps as authorities remain on high alert.

According to the state government, 27 houses were completely destroyed and 196 others were partially damaged. A total of 5,792 people have been evacuated to 209 relief camps. Floodwaters inundated roads, homes and temples, while rivers overflowed and the Malankara Dam opened five shutters following heavy rainfall. Several districts witnessed severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic and daily life.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for 12 districts, warning of more heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Chief Minister V D Satheesan urged people, especially those living in hilly areas, to remain vigilant and assured relief and rehabilitation support for affected families.

With more rain forecast, rescue and relief operations remain underway as Kerala continues to battle severe flooding, landslides and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
