Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has clarified that India has not violated any international rules by continuing to import oil from Russia. His remarks come in response to criticism from former US trade adviser Peter Navarro, who questioned India’s energy trade choices.
Puri stressed that India’s decisions are based on national interests and the need to ensure affordable energy for its citizens. He underlined that all purchases from Russia are conducted within the framework of international regulations and that New Delhi remains transparent about its trade practices.
India has consistently maintained that it will prioritize energy security over political pressure, especially at a time when global crude prices have placed a burden on developing economies. Officials also point out that European countries continue to import significant volumes of Russian energy, making it unfair to single out India.
The minister’s statement is being viewed as a firm message that India will not bow to external criticism while making decisions essential for its economy. With energy demand on the rise, New Delhi’s position reflects a pragmatic approach — balancing geopolitical realities with domestic requirements.
