Prime Minister Narendra Modi described efforts to improve India-China relations as “needed for humanity” during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, signaling cautious optimism after years of border tensions. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS+ Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
According to official sources, the two leaders discussed regional stability, global economic challenges, and bilateral issues that have strained ties since the 2020 border standoff in Ladakh. While both sides maintained firm positions on security concerns, Modi emphasized that dialogue and peaceful coexistence remain essential for the well-being of the two nations and the wider world.
The interaction comes at a time when India and China are navigating complex economic and strategic challenges. China continues to be one of India’s largest trading partners, despite security-related frictions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The meeting is being viewed as an attempt to reduce hostilities and restore communication channels between the two governments.
Experts note that while the conversation marks a positive gesture, substantial differences remain unresolved. “Both leaders are aware that prolonged hostility benefits neither side. However, real progress will depend on addressing core disputes,” said a senior foreign policy analyst.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India remains committed to protecting its sovereignty while also exploring opportunities for cooperation on global issues, including climate change, trade, and development.
The Modi-Xi engagement has drawn international attention, with many observers linking it to broader geopolitical shifts in Asia.
