Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour has said India can be a strong partner for Wellington as both countries look to deepen their relationship. His comments come as India and New Zealand push ahead with a free trade agreement and broader cooperation in trade, sports, energy and defence.
Seymour has publicly backed stronger ties with India and argued that the relationship should be judged on practical gains for both countries. He has said the Indian community makes a major contribution to New Zealand society and that the two countries have room to expand cooperation across business, culture and technology. In earlier remarks, he also welcomed progress on the trade deal, saying it would help New Zealand exporters reach one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets.
The timing is significant because India’s ties with New Zealand are moving into a more strategic phase. The two sides have been discussing ways to expand trade access, improve mobility and build stronger links in the Indo-Pacific. Seymour’s remarks suggest there is political support in Wellington for making the partnership more ambitious.
Seymour’s message is that India is not just a market, but a long-term partner with room to grow in multiple sectors. As the trade deal advances, both countries appear to be positioning the relationship as one that can deliver economic and strategic benefits over time.
