Desk Correspondent , Washington DC – ICE officers shot and wound a man during an immigration arrest in Patterson, California, on Tuesday. The suspect, Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, was injured after he allegedly tried to run over an agent with his car during a targeted vehicle stop. Department of Homeland Security officials said agents fired defensive shots in response. Hernandez was taken to a hospital, where he is stable, though his family has not been allowed to visit him. The incident occurred about 74 miles southeast of San Francisco in central California.
Dashcam footage released by authorities showed three officers approaching a stopped vehicle on the side of the road. One officer touched the driver-side window before the car reversed and struck a vehicle behind it. The driver then pulled forward toward the officers, turned sharply and drove over a roadway median. No audio captured any commands or warnings. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office was not involved in the arrest or shooting. The FBI is leading the investigation.
Hernandez, a laborer who rehabilitates fire-damaged properties, has a two-year-old daughter and is engaged to a U.S. citizen. He is wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder. His attorney, Patrick Kolasinski, disputed the official account and suggested authorities may have mistaken his client for someone with a similar name. “His family has not been allowed in to see him at the hospital but were told by a social worker that he is stable,” Kolasinski said. The shooting comes amid heightened federal immigration enforcement operations.
