Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - Relentless monsoon rains continue to batter Maharashtra, disrupting transport, shutting schools and claiming lives across the state. With the IMD issuing a red alert for several districts, authorities have stepped up emergency measures as heavy rainfall shows no signs of easing.
A 10-year-old boy was swept away by the swollen Kamvari River in Bhiwandi while dumping household garbage, marking the second drowning in the river within 24 hours after a 17-year-old boy lost his life on Sunday. In Pune's Maval tehsil, one person was killed after a landslide buried a house, while NDRF teams continued searching for two others trapped under the debris. In Mumbai's Mankhurd, six people, including four children, died after a chawl building collapsed due to the incessant rain.
Heavy rainfall also disrupted road and rail connectivity. A landslide near Tunnel 2 on the Pune–Mumbai Connecting Link Road forced traffic diversions, while landslides in the Bhor Ghat section led to the suspension of Mumbai–Pune train services. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, prompting the SDMA to advise work from home for private offices and a half-day for non-essential government offices. Schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai have also remained closed as a precaution.
With more heavy rainfall forecast, disaster response teams remain on high alert across Maharashtra. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas and follow official advisories as rescue and restoration operations continue.
