In a striking and symbolic move, a Durga Puja committee in Murshidabad, West Bengal, unveiled an “asura” idol modeled after former U.S. President Donald Trump. The clay statue, complete with pale skin and hair reminiscent of Trump, has gone viral on social media, sparking both amusement and criticism.
The committee behind the display explained that their decision was a response to Trump’s imposition of a 50 % tariff on Indian goods and stringent visa policies, which they viewed as a betrayal of India’s interests and trust. One spokesperson stated, “Our Prime Minister considered Donald Trump a friend. Trump has betrayed him. That is why he has been shown as a demon.”
The idol was created by artist Asim Pal, who is seen shaping the demon’s hair in a viral video. The pandal, located at the Khagra Crematorium Ghat Puja Committee, attracted crowds curious to see the political commentary through art.
Reactions have been sharply divided. Some social media users and visitors praised the creative boldness, while others condemned mixing politics with religious celebration. “This is not right. Pujo is not a joke,” commented one critic.
The unusual depiction comes against the backdrop of intensifying trade tensions between India and the U.S., as both sides continue talks to resolve tariff and diplomatic disputes.
