Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - On February 3, Sahil Dhaneshra, a 23-year-old BBA student, was killed in a tragic road accident that transformed an ordinary morning into a lifelong tragedy for his family. The accident occurred in Dwarka South, and the driver responsible was only 17 years old, making them a minor. According to the Juvenile Justice Board’s observation of the driver’s culpability after the fatal accident, “the driver had no understanding of the value of life” following the accident.
Sahil Dhaneshra was riding his motorcycle to work at Lal Bahadur Shastri College on the day of the accident when he was struck by a speeding Mahindra Scorpio driven by a minor driver. After striking Sahil’s motorcycle, the Mahindra Scorpio crashed into a parked cab; the cab driver also suffered serious injuries as a result.
The accident occurred as a result of the underage, speeding driver losing control of the vehicle. Surveillance video and multiple eyewitness accounts show the Mahindra Scorpio travelling at a high rate of speed just before striking Sahil's motorcycle, with the Mahindra Scorpio narrowly missing hitting a bus, before hitting Sahil's motorcycle. After reviewing the speed at which the minor driver was travelling and the near misses documented in the video, many have expressed anger at the speed and recklessness demonstrated by the young driver.
Inna Makan, who is Sahil's mother, has turned down the apology made by the father of the minor driver, as she believes that no amount of words or apologies would bring back her son. She stated that the SUV that killed Sahil had a significant number of overspeeding and reckless driving violations. She also believes that at the time of the accident, the 17-year-old driver was recording "fun reels" with his sister on social media.
Following this incident, the authorities charged the father of the minor driver and filed an FIR against him under the Motor Vehicle Act for allowing his minor son to operate a motor vehicle. The minor driver was placed in an observation home for a short period but was then granted interim bail to take his Class 10 board exams. This decision has generated public outcry and raised questions about the treatment of juvenile offenders in fatal collisions.
The post-mortem report revealed that Sahil sustained multiple broken bones and heavy head and chest trauma consistent with a collision of this type.
Friends, family, and community leaders are calling for tougher enforcement of traffic laws, greater accountability for parents, and harsher penalties for reckless driving, especially when dealing with young drivers who do not have a license. This day began as just another day; however, due to a lapse in responsible behaviour, it will now serve as a painful reminder of just how quickly dreams can be ruined. How a bright sunny day can suddenly turn into a nightmare for an entire family.
