Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi - Delhi continues to face a severe water crisis with a daily shortfall of 90 to 100 million gallons (MGD), despite Haryana releasing an additional 55 cusecs of water through the Munak canal. Total supply has plunged to around 904 MGD against the usual 1,002 MGD, leaving residents reeling from dry taps and low pressure. Government officials state the situation will not improve until Haryana releases substantial additional water via the Yamuna River channel to feed the Wazirabad and Chandrawal treatment plants.
The national capital relies on its neighbors for over 86% of its raw water, with Haryana providing roughly 61% and Uttar Pradesh contributing 25% via the Ganga system. While the Munak canal is currently flowing near its maximum capacity, the Yamuna River channel route—which normally delivers 210 cusecs—has completely dried up. Delhi officials are urgently requesting further humanitarian releases from the Hathnikund Barrage to counter massive transmission losses and revive the parched river course.
The ongoing shortage has triggered widespread supply cuts and a surge in contamination complaints across central, northern, and western Delhi, including areas near Delhi University. Delhi Jal Board officials warned that dropping pipeline pressure, combined with residents using household suction pumps, is actively pulling contaminated groundwater into the empty supply network. Affected pockets include parts of Dwarka, Rohini, Rajinder Nagar, and Pitampura, where residents report irregular and unsafe water supply.
