Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was reportedly attacked during a public grievance hearing at her Civil Lines residence on Wednesday, an incident that has rapidly escalated into a political controversy. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Anil Jha has sensationally claimed the attack was "staged" for "drama" by Gupta herself, asserting that "no attack took place".
Jha told reporters he has known Gupta for a long time and alleged she "orchestrated this attack and arranged a man to create a story". He even recounted a past incident from their Delhi University Students’ Union days, claiming Gupta once asked him to burn some of her hair to "show how she was attacked".
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted sharply to these statements. BJP MLA Harish Khurana questioned if Jha's comments represent the AAP's official stand, stating, "If this is indeed so, you should be ashamed". BJP MLA Shikha Roy further condemned the remarks, describing the AAP as a "party of theatrics and drama" that previously orchestrated incidents for advantage.
The individual identified as the attacker, 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, was arrested after allegedly slapping, pulling CM Gupta's hair, and abusing her during the 'Jan Sunwai' programme. Delhi Police have registered an attempt to murder case. Chief Minister Gupta is reported to be in a stable condition, albeit still in shock.
