Can Surging Gas Prices Reverse the EV Sales Slump?

Desk correspondent , Washington DC - Surging gasoline prices are breathing new life into interest in electric vehicles (EVs), even as many markets face a prolonged slump in EV sales. With the national average gas price in the United States jumping by roughly 15–20% since late February 2026 driven largely by the Iran‑related surge in oil markets consumers are once again scrutinizing EVs as a way to cut fuel costs at the pump. Analysts say the pattern echoes earlier fuel price spikes, when high gas bills clearly boosted both EV interest and sales, but they warn that this time around, higher upfront EV prices and the loss of key federal incentives complicate any quick rebound.

Searches and views for EVs have risen noticeably in recent weeks, even though overall EV sales remain well below 2025 levels. US‑based market data show EV transaction prices slipping slightly in early 2026 while gas car prices creep up, narrowing the price gap between the two to about $6,500 an all‑time low in relative terms making EVs look more financially attractive on paper. At the same time, rising average gas prices, which have climbed from around $3.00 per gallon in early February to roughly $3.50-$3.60 nationally (and over $5.00 in some states such as California), are making every mile of driving more expensive for conventional fuel owners.

The key question is whether higher fuel costs translate into stronger EV registrations or simply more browsing. Recent data indicate that used EV demand in the US and Europe has already ticked up, helped by more plentiful supply and improving battery range in second hand models, alongside growing charging infrastructure and jump in gas prices. Industry watchers point to 2022, when a spike in oil prices preceded a sustained run up in EV sales, as a potential template, if elevated gas prices persist and governments respond with renewed tax or tariff incentives, EV demand could gradually recover even after the 2026 slump. However, if fuel price spikes remain short lived or if consumers remain wary of EV costs, charging access, or battery life, the current “bump” in interest may fade before it turns into a durable sales rebound.
