A political row has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after party MP Mahua Moitra’s sharp remarks directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Moitra, known for her outspoken speeches, had made comments in a recent public address that the BJP termed as “derogatory” and “unbecoming of a parliamentarian.” Senior BJP leaders accused the TMC of encouraging personal attacks rather than engaging in constructive debate on policy issues. They demanded an apology from Moitra and urged party chief Mamata Banerjee to clarify her stance.
Responding to the criticism, TMC leaders came out in Moitra’s defence, arguing that she was exercising her democratic right to question those in power. They accused the BJP of trying to “silence voices of dissent” by targeting opposition leaders for their statements.
The exchange has triggered a fresh war of words between the two parties, with both sides trading accusations of lowering the political discourse. While the BJP has alleged that Moitra’s remarks reflect the TMC’s “politics of insult,” the TMC insists that questioning central leaders is part of accountability in a democracy.
Political observers suggest that such clashes may intensify as the political climate heats up in West Bengal and nationally ahead of upcoming electoral contests. The episode has once again underlined the polarised nature of political dialogue between the ruling BJP and the opposition TMC.
