Assam Floods Trigger Bridge Collapse

Ananya Lohia , Assam - Heavy rainfall continued to batter Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, causing floods, landslides, and major disruptions to transport infrastructure. In Assam’s Dhemaji district.

A large section of a railway bridge collapsed after rising river waters washed away part of the riverbank, forcing the suspension of train services between Murkongselek and Silapathar. According to railway officials, the bridge’s pier became unstable due to severe erosion caused by heavy rainfall. No casualties or train damage were reported, as rail traffic on the route had already been halted because of flooding.

The flood situation has worsened in Dhemaji, where over 15,000 people have been affected, while the total number of flood-hit residents across Assam has crossed 22,000. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government is closely monitoring the situation and mobilising resources for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh continues to face flash floods and landslides, with several key roads blocked in East Siang district. The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for five districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm in the next 24 hours. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as rescue and emergency teams stay on standby.
