Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Monday on a day-long visit to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The visit also carries political significance as Shah is expected to review the BJP's organisational strategy in West Bengal.
Shah was received at the airport by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior BJP leaders. He began his visit by paying floral tributes at Syama Prasad Mookerjee's ancestral residence in Bhabanipur.
Later, the Home Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a proposed 125-foot statue of Mookerjee at Eco Park before attending a commemorative programme at the Biswa Bangla Mela Ground. Shah is also expected to hold key meetings with the state BJP leadership to discuss the party's organisational plans and future strategy in West Bengal.
Shah's visit marks his first trip to West Bengal since the new BJP government took office in May and is being closely watched for both its symbolic and political significance.
