Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - The investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal's Baruipur has intensified, with police arresting two people and detaining three others for questioning. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed as authorities step up efforts to crack the case.
According to police, the girl's body was recovered from a pond in South 24 Parganas a day after she went missing. Four FIRs have been registered, including one related to the alleged rape and murder of the minor and another over the lynching of a man during the violence that erupted after the body was found. Police said raids are underway to arrest the remaining accused, while the post-mortem report is awaited.
Following the incident, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed in parts of Baruipur and adjoining areas. Heavy police deployment remains in place after locals blocked roads and railway tracks demanding justice. The victim's father said he spoke to the Chief Minister, who assured him that the culprits would be arrested and punished.
Police said the SIT will continue its investigation while awaiting forensic and post-mortem findings. Security has been tightened in the area as authorities work to maintain law and order and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
