Washington, August 26 – The United States has issued a formal notice to India regarding the implementation of a 50% tariff on most Indian imports, set to take effect on August 27, 2025, at 12:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time. This move follows President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14329, which addresses national security concerns related to Russia and its trade allies, including India.
The new tariffs are part of a broader strategy to penalize countries that continue to engage in economic activities with Russia, particularly the purchase of Russian crude oil. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the increased levies will apply to Indian products "entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption" after the specified deadline.
The affected sectors include textiles, seafood, and other consumer goods, while exemptions have been made for pharmaceuticals and electronics. Indian officials have expressed strong opposition to the tariffs, labeling them as unjustified and inconsistent with U.S. policies toward other countries engaging with Russia.
In response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the government's commitment to protecting small entrepreneurs, farmers, and domestic industries. He stated, "No matter how much pressure comes, we will bear it," signaling India's resolve to withstand external economic pressures.
The implementation of these tariffs is expected to have significant economic implications, potentially affecting trade relations and economic growth projections for both nations.
