Washington, August 26 – President Donald Trump has revised his earlier statement regarding the number of fighter jets downed during the May 2025 military conflict between India and Pakistan. Initially, Trump claimed that five jets were shot down; however, he now asserts that seven jets were downed, though he did not specify which side's aircraft were involved.
Trump reiterated his belief that his intervention prevented a potential nuclear escalation between the two nations. He stated, "The war with India and Pakistan was the next level that was going to be a nuclear war... They already shot down seven jets—that was raging."
These remarks come weeks after Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh of India confirmed that India had downed five Pakistani fighter jets during Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Singh also mentioned the destruction of a large Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft.
Trump's updated statement has prompted further scrutiny, as it contrasts with previous claims and lacks corroboration from independent sources. The Indian government has consistently maintained that the ceasefire was a result of its own diplomatic efforts and has not acknowledged Trump's involvement in mediating the conflict.
The situation remains fluid, with both countries' airspaces experiencing closures and reroutings, impacting global aviation networks.
