Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - President Donald Trump announced that a great settlement to end the war with Iran could be signed soon in Europe, claiming the deal is largely negotiated and imminent. However, Iranian officials have yet to confirm the agreement, with Tehran stating no final decision has been made and reports of a finalized deal remain purely conjectural.
Trump said during an Oval Office event that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement "pending the finalization of documents," which could potentially be signed in Europe within the weekend, with Vice President JD Vance present at the ceremony. He announced he had "cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening," claiming discussions had been "brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved". This marks at least the third time Trump has claimed an Iran deal is around the corner, despite previous negotiations falling apart.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Tehran has not yet made a final decision on any agreement with the U.S. and will not compromise on its "red lines" in negotiations. Baghaei called reports of a finalized agreement "merely speculation" and emphasized that while some progress has been reached in talks, a deal "is not imminent". Iran has previously rejected Trump's 15-point peace proposal, describing it as "extremely maximalist and unreasonable" and outlining its own conditions including an end to attacks and compensation for war damages.
The conflicting messages from Washington and Tehran underscore the fragile nature of negotiations as the three month old conflict continues. While Trump celebrates what he calls a breakthrough and cancels military strikes, Iran maintains its skepticism and refuses to commit without protecting its stated red lines, leaving the path to peace uncertain.
