Sikkim witnessed a tragic incident when a landslide struck a hillside village, killing three people and injuring two others. The disaster took place late on Monday night after continuous rainfall loosened rocks and soil in the region, causing them to slide down and hit residential areas.
Rescue workers from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with police teams and local volunteers, rushed to the spot. After hours of effort, they recovered the bodies of three victims trapped under debris. Two injured survivors were shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors said their condition is stable.
Officials confirmed that heavy rains over the past few days had already weakened the slopes. Following the incident, families living in vulnerable houses have been shifted to safer shelters. Relief material such as food, blankets, and tents has also been distributed. The district administration has set up control rooms to monitor the situation and provide immediate help if more landslides occur.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased. He also directed officials to speed up clearance of blocked roads so that essential supplies can reach affected areas without delay.
Experts have repeatedly warned that Sikkim and other northeastern states face frequent landslides due to fragile mountain terrain, unplanned construction, and climate change. The latest incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for better slope management and disaster preparedness in the region.
