News Desk : A major construction disaster struck Kolkata's Taratala on Wednesday afternoon, after the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed, four workers has been died till now. Rescue teams, including the Army and NDRF, have launched an intensive operation as authorities fear more labourers remain trapped beneath the rubble.
The accident occurred while concrete casting work was underway at the warehouse site. Preliminary reports suggest that around 50 to 60 labourers were working when the roof suddenly caved in, burying workers under concrete and steel debris. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the site and said 18 people are still believed to be trapped. He confirmed that the injured have been admitted to SSKM Hospital, while rescue efforts are being carried out jointly by the Army, NDRF, police and disaster management teams.
In a significant announcement, Adhikari ordered a halt to all construction projects in Kolkata until July 31. He also directed a special audit of building plans and on-site inspections across ongoing projects, stating that preliminary findings indicate flaws in the building plan approved by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation earlier this year. Heavy machinery, cranes and gas cutters are being used to clear the debris as rescuers continue their search for survivors. Senior ministers and officials remain at the site monitoring the operation.
As rescue teams race against time, the Taratala warehouse collapse has raised serious concerns over construction safety standards in the city. A detailed investigation is expected once the rescue operation is completed.
The death toll from the under construction warehouse collapse in Kolkata's Taratala has risen to nine. West Bengal CM directly blames TMC government.
