Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously designed and built naval vessels—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray—in Kolkata, marking a major boost to India's maritime strength and defence self-reliance. The vessels were inducted into the Indian Navy at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and have been built with over 75 per cent indigenous content.
Addressing the ceremony, Modi said the induction of the three ships would provide fresh momentum to India's journey towards becoming a stronger maritime power. Stressing the importance of maritime capabilities in global trade, security and economic prosperity, he said a nation's strategic and economic influence is closely linked to its strength at sea. The Prime Minister also highlighted India's growing defence manufacturing sector, noting that more than 40 indigenous warships and submarines have joined the Navy in recent years, while 45 major naval platforms are currently under construction.
Among the newly commissioned vessels, INS Dunagiri is a Project 17A stealth frigate equipped with BrahMos missiles and advanced air defence systems, significantly enhancing the Navy's combat capabilities. INS Sanshodhak is an advanced hydrographic survey vessel designed for coastal and deep-sea surveys, while INS Agray is an anti-submarine warfare craft capable of detecting and neutralising underwater threats in shallow waters. All three vessels were designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) with the participation of over 200 MSMEs.
The commissioning of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray is expected to strengthen the Indian Navy's operational capabilities across multiple domains while reinforcing the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and India's emergence as a major maritime power.
