Ananya Lohia , Ayodhya - The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Ram Temple donation embezzlement case intensified its investigation on Thursday by questioning three key Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust functionaries for nearly six hours in Ayodhya. The development came as the probe gathered pace with fresh custodial interrogation and the possibility of more arrests.
The SIT questioned former Trust general secretary Champat Rai, Trust member Anil Mishra and functionary Gopal Rao over the temple's donation collection, counting and banking procedures. Investigators also secured a 24-hour police custody remand for accused Avinash Shukla, from whose residence over ₹20 lakh in cash was earlier recovered. Officials said the interrogation is expected to help identify others allegedly involved in the case.
The probe is examining whether lapses in supervision, security protocols and cash-handling procedures enabled the alleged diversion of devotees' donations. Investigators are also reviewing the role of the State Bank of India, outsourced cash-counting staff and the implementation of standard operating procedures.
The SIT, which has been given time until July 15 to complete its investigation, is expected to submit its final report to the Uttar Pradesh government later this month. The findings could determine whether the criminal investigation is expanded further, even as the controversy continues to cast a shadow over the Ram Temple Trust.
