New Delhi, August 18 — In a major development for Indian cricket, Shreyas Iyer is likely to take over as the new captain of the One-Day International (ODI) team, replacing veteran opener Rohit Sharma, according to media reports.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to make an official announcement soon. Sources suggest that while Shubman Gill was also being considered for the leadership role, the board has decided against his appointment, opting instead for the more experienced Iyer.
Rohit Sharma, who has led India in multiple ICC tournaments, is expected to step aside from the ODI captaincy as part of a gradual transition plan ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. BCCI officials are said to be focusing on building a younger leadership group that can take the team forward over the next few years.
Iyer, known for his calm temperament and batting consistency, has previously captained Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has been viewed as a strong leadership candidate. The formal announcement is expected within days, though BCCI has yet to issue an official statement.
