Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - The Constitution (131st Amendment Bill), seeking to provide reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after it did not secured the required majority. The bill fell short of the two-third majority of 352, out of total 528 members present in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation aimed to ensure greater representation of women in the country's law- making bodies, but faced several strong resistance from several members during the debate.
During the voting on the Bill, 298 MPs voted in favor of it and 230 against the bill. Speaker Om Birla announced the results of the voting, saying it's not possible to move forward with this legislation as it failed to get the required majority for its passage. The bill triggered intense discussions in the House, in which supporters highlighted the gender equality and the increased participation of women in politics. After the result, the women's MPs and NDA alliance staged a protest in the Parliament complex against the opposition parties. Parliamentary Affair Minister Kiren Rijiju also accused the Opposition of losing the opportunity to provide reservations to women.
The bill’s failure marks a major setback to efforts aimed at ensuring greater representation of women in India’s legislative system. With the bill failing to pass in the Lok Sabha, the push for women’s reservation has suffered a major delay. The development underscores the challenges in building agreement on such a crucial reform. Later the house adjourned to meet again at 11 AM on 18 April, 2026.
