Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, August 17 — Authorities have stepped up security at a 200-year-old mausoleum in Abu Nagar Eidgah, Fatehpur, after it was recently vandalized, triggering communal tension in the area.
According to officials, a group of people entered the premises last week, alleging that the mausoleum had been constructed over an ancient Hindu temple. Members of the group damaged parts of the structure and placed saffron flags on it, prompting police to intervene. Reinforcements from nearby stations were rushed in to bring the situation under control.
In response, the district administration repaired the damaged portions and imposed prohibitory orders in the vicinity. A large police contingent, including the Special Task Force (STF), has been deployed to prevent further incidents. Patrolling has been intensified, and checkpoints have been set up across sensitive areas.
An FIR has been lodged against ten identified persons, including local political functionaries and religious leaders, as well as about 150 unknown individuals. They have been charged under multiple sections related to unlawful assembly, vandalism, and disturbing public order. However, no arrests have been reported so far.
Officials said surveillance has been increased ahead of Janmashtami to ensure peace is maintained. “The situation is under control, but security will remain strict to avoid any flare-ups,” a senior police officer said.
The measures underline the administration’s efforts to safeguard communal harmony while addressing concerns around the disputed site.
