Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - Rajasthan Royals are on the brink of securing a place in the IPL 2026 playoffs as they prepare to face Mumbai Indians in their final league-stage match on Sunday. A victory will confirm Rajasthan’s qualification for the playoffs, while a defeat could open the door for Punjab Kings to snatch the final spot after their crucial win over Lucknow Super Giants.
RR are expected to receive a major boost with skipper Riyan Parag likely to return after missing the last two matches due to a hamstring injury. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is also expected to be back in action following recovery from elbow and knee concerns. Their return could strengthen Rajasthan significantly in what is effectively a knockout encounter. One of the biggest attractions of the match will be the contest between teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and star MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Earlier this season in Guwahati, Vaibhav grabbed headlines by smashing Bumrah for a six off the very first ball he faced from the India pacer. Speaking ahead of the clash, RR assistant coach Trevor Penney praised the youngster’s fearless attitude and natural confidence, saying he had rarely seen such composure and excitement in a player despite spending four decades in cricket.
Trevor Penney also warned against underestimating Mumbai Indians despite their elimination from the playoff race. Calling MI a “World XI” because of the quality in their squad, Penney admitted Rajasthan are expecting a tough challenge from a side with nothing left to lose. He added that RR are excited to be in control of their own destiny, knowing a win would send them straight into the qualifiers in Chandigarh.
If Rajasthan Royals fail to beat Mumbai Indians, the playoff race could go down to the final league match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals. In that scenario, Punjab Kings would remain favourites to qualify unless Kolkata register a massive win and dramatically improve their net run rate.
